In this presentation, you will learn about digital forensics and how it is used in investigations. Using real world examples, the basics of the digital forensics investigative process will be covered as well as an explanation of some of the tools of the trade. We’ll discuss how encryption works to secure data and is used as the foundation for Bitcoin. The presentation will cover how these emerging technologies, as well as others such as block chain systems, internet of things (IoT), and evidence rich social media networks, are quickly changing investigations.

We will examine how the new schedule A impacts people (especially married) and how preparers SHOULD advise their clients upon impending impact. Additionally, we will talk about the remnants of the old Schedule A still being applicable on state and local returns. Lastly, we will talk about way to minimize the SALT tax 10k ceiling.

We will talk about the illegality (perhaps) of an S Corp depending on your profession and residency. Besides the common benefits and downsides we will talk about how a business advisor must explain the issues that can/will arise if an S-Corp is formed. We also will stress the most common error of LLCs (i.e. making oneself an employee).

11:20 am: “The Usefulness of Academic Accounting Research in Practice – Earnings Announcements” (1 OT)
This presentation will discuss academic research in accounting, with a particular focus on the relation between stock prices and earnings information. It will summarize some classis research in the accounting literature, and discuss the following paper, by Ivo Jansen and Andrei Nikiforov—both of Rutgers University—in greater detail: “Fear and Greed: a Returns-Based Trading Strategy around Earnings Announcements.”
